Preparing your face before shaving is essential for achieving a smooth and irritation-free shave. We have put together some key steps you can follow to prepare your face for shaving with this pre-shave routine -
STEP 1: Cleanse your face
Start by washing your face with a gentle facial cleanser and warm water. This will remove any dirt, oil, or impurities from your skin and help soften the facial hair.
STEP 2: Exfoliate
This step is optional but if you want to go the extra mile, consider exfoliating your skin before shaving. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, resulting in a closer shave. Use a gentle facial scrub or exfoliating brush in circular motions to gently scrub your face. Then rinse off with warm water once finished.
STEP 3: Apply a warm towel
Moisten a clean towel with very warm water and wring out the excess. Place the warm towel on your face for a couple of minutes. The heat and moisture will help soften your facial hair, open up your pores, and make shaving easier.
STEP 4: Use a pre-shave product
Applying a pre-shave product, such as a pre-shave oil, cream or tonic, can provide additional lubrication and protection for your skin. These products can help reduce friction and minimise irritation during shaving.
STEP 5: Apply shaving cream or gel
Apply a generous amount of shaving cream, foam or gel to your damp face. Use your fingertips or a shaving brush to work the product into a rich lather. Make sure to cover the entire area you plan to shave.
STEP 6: Let the shaving cream or gel sit
Allow the shaving cream, foam or gel to sit on your face for a minute or two. This will further soften the hair and allow the product to hydrate your skin.
TIME TO SHAVE
Shave with a sharp razor: Use a sharp and clean razor for shaving. Start by shaving in the direction of hair growth for the first pass. This helps reduce the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs. If needed, you can make a second pass against the grain for a closer shave.
Rinse and moisturise: After shaving, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores and remove any residual shaving cream. Pat your face dry with a clean towel and apply a soothing aftershave balm, aftershave lotion and/or moisturiser to hydrate and calm the skin.
TOP TIP: Remember to use light, gentle strokes while shaving and avoid applying excessive pressure, as this can cause irritation and razor burn. Additionally, always use a clean and sharp razor blade to minimise the risk of nicks and cuts.
